Running Beyond the Finish Line What Dr. R. Vijay Anand Says About Running: Discipline, Purpose & Life Journey

- A compelling opening story from your life
The Morning That Changed My Life (3:59 am my Alarm) set
One quiet morning, before the sun had risen, I laced up my running shoes and stepped onto an empty road. There were no spectators, no medals, and no applause—only a decision to become a better version of myself. As a lecturer, I had always encouraged my students to value discipline and perseverance, but I realized that I needed to live those values myself. Every step I took that morning was a step away from excuses and toward purpose. What began as a simple effort to improve my health gradually became a lifelong journey of discipline, resilience, and self-discovery. Running did not just transform my body; it transformed my mindset, my teaching, and my outlook on life.
- Why you started running
I started running in 2012 with a single goal—to lose weight. At that time, I viewed running simply as a form of exercise to improve my physical appearance. However, the COVID-19 pandemic changed my perspective completely. It reminded me that health is our greatest wealth and that good health cannot be taken for granted. Since then, running has become an essential part of my daily lifestyle rather than just a fitness activity. Today, I run not only to stay physically fit but also to strengthen my mind, build self-discipline, reduce stress, and inspire my students, colleagues, and community to embrace a healthier way of life.
- The turning point that changed your mindset
The real turning point in my running journey came when I made running a daily habit rather than an occasional activity. Every day, I complete at least 5 kilometres, and whenever possible, I extend my run to 10–12 kilometres. Every Sunday, I challenge myself with a 21-kilometre-long run. These runs are no longer just about distance; they are moments of self-reflection, peace, and personal growth. Completing each run gives me a deep sense of comfort, confidence, and satisfaction that stays with me throughout the day. Running has become more than exercise—it is my lifestyle, my daily meditation, and a constant reminder that discipline and consistency are the keys to a healthy and meaningful life.

Physical Benefits of Running
- Heart Health: Daily running has strengthened my heart, improved blood circulation, and increased my endurance.
- Lung Capacity: Regular running has enhanced my breathing efficiency, allowing me to run longer with greater comfort.
- Muscle Strength: Running has strengthened my leg muscles, improved joint stability, and enhanced overall physical fitness.
- Immunity: Maintaining a consistent running routine has helped me stay healthier and better prepared to cope with everyday illnesses.

Psychological Benefits of Running
- Stress Management: Every morning run refreshes my mind and helps me start the day with a positive attitude.
- Self-Confidence: Completing my daily 5–10 km runs and weekly 21 km long runs has strengthened my belief that consistency leads to success.
- Resilience: Running has taught me to overcome discomfort, remain patient during challenges, and never give up when the journey becomes difficult.
- Mental Clarity: Running gives, me time to reflect, make better decisions, and maintain focus in both my personal and professional life.
Sports Science and Psychology
Sports science shows that regular aerobic exercise strengthens the cardiovascular and respiratory systems while improving muscular endurance and overall fitness. Psychological research also indicates that running reduces stress, enhances mood, and builds self-discipline through the consistent release of feel-good hormones and the development of positive habits. My own journey reflects these principles—running has become more than a fitness activity; it is a lifestyle that keeps me physically healthy, mentally strong, and professionally effective as a lecturer.

"Running has taught me that discipline begins before sunrise, success is built one step at a time, and consistency is the strongest foundation for a meaningful life."
Balancing Life as a Lecturer and a Runner
Being a lecturer and a runner is not difficult—it is a perfect combination. Running gives, me energy, and teaching gives me purpose. I begin every morning with a run, and I enter my classroom with a fresh mind, a positive attitude, and renewed confidence. I believe my students learn not only from my lectures but also from my lifestyle.
Challenges, Failures, and Lessons
My journey was not always easy. I faced muscle pain, tiredness, busy work schedules, and days when I lacked motivation. Sometimes I had to slow down or shorten my run. These moments taught me an important lesson: missing one run is not failure; quitting is. Every challenge made me stronger, wiser, and more patient.
Consistency and Discipline
The greatest lesson running has taught me is that consistency beats intensity. I run 5 km every day, often 10–12 km, and every Sunday I complete a 21 km long run. These daily habits have become part of my life. Running has taught me that success does not come from one great effort—it comes from small actions repeated every day. The discipline I build on the road helps me become a better lecturer, a better runner, and a better human being.

How Running Made Me a Better Lecturer
Running has made me more energetic, focused, and patient. It has improved my time management, self-discipline, and mental clarity. Every morning run prepares me to teach with confidence and enthusiasm.

Lessons for Students
Success is not built overnight. Like running, education is a journey of small, consistent efforts. Learn every day, stay disciplined, and never give up when the path becomes difficult.
Lessons for Teachers
Students learn more from what we do than from what we say. A teacher who lives a disciplined and healthy lifestyle becomes a role model beyond the classroom.
Leadership Through Example
True leadership begins with self-leadership. I believe in inspiring others through my actions rather than my words. Every kilometre I run reminds my students that discipline, consistency, and perseverance are the real foundations of success.
"A lecture can inspire for an hour; a teacher's example can inspire for a lifetime."

Lessons for Parents, Professionals, and Society
Running changed my life, but its greatest achievement is that it changed my family. My consistency inspired my wife, Mrs. Kanaga, my beloved son, Livin Adhithyaa, and my mother, Mrs. Maragatham, to make daily exercise a part of their lives. This is my proudest medal—not the races I have finished, but the healthy lifestyle we now share as a family.
For parents, the best advice is not spoken—it is demonstrated. Children follow our actions more than our words.
For professionals, health is the foundation of productivity. A healthy body supports a focused mind, better decisions, and greater success.
For society, every healthy individual contributes to a healthier community. One person's discipline can inspire many others.
Time Management: No Excuses, Only Priorities
Many people say, "I don't have time to exercise." I understand that feeling because I travel every day from Maduranthakam to Chennai (Koyambedu) for my professional duties. My work requires long hours of commuting, yet I have never allowed my busy schedule to become an excuse.
I choose to wake up early because I believe health is not found by making time—it is found by giving it priority. My daily run reminds me that even the busiest person can live a healthy life with discipline and planning.

"Distance is not a barrier. Lack of commitment is."

- My Running Philosophy
For me, running is not just a sport; it is a way of life. Every step teaches me discipline, patience, and perseverance. I do not run only to complete races—I run to build a stronger body, a calmer mind, and a better personality. Running gives me confidence, happiness, and the strength to face life's challenges with a positive attitude.
- My Vision for Inspiring Others
My dream is to encourage people from all walks of life—students, teachers, professionals, parents, and senior citizens—to make health a priority. I believe inspiration comes through action. When my family, students, and friends see my consistent lifestyle, I hope they understand that small daily habits can create a big transformation.
- My Signature Message
Running has taught me that success is not created in one day; it is built through thousands of small steps. Discipline creates habits, habits create success, and consistency creates a meaningful life.
"I run not only to change my body, but to strengthen my mind and inspire others to change their lives."
Running Beyond the Finish Line: Reflections of a Lecturer and a Runner

By Dr. R. Vijay Anand
People often ask me why I run.
Some think it is for fitness. Some think it is for medals. Some think it is to complete races.
My answer is simple.
I don't run to escape life; I run to prepare myself for it.
As a lecturer, I teach theories, principles, and concepts inside the classroom. As a runner, I learn discipline, patience, resilience, and humility on the road. These two journeys complement each other.
A lecture may last an hour, but a teacher's influence can last a lifetime.
A run may last an hour, but the habits developed during that hour shape an entire life.
Running has taught me lessons that no textbook could.
It taught me that success is not built in one day but through thousands of small, consistent efforts.
It taught me that every difficult climb eventually leads to a beautiful view.
It taught me that failure is not falling behind others—it is giving up on yourself.
When my students ask me how to become successful, I tell them that success begins with discipline. Running has strengthened that belief. Every early morning run reminds me that discipline is choosing what is important over what is comfortable.
As an educator, I believe that students learn more from what teachers do than from what teachers say. If I expect my students to be punctual, committed, and disciplined, I must first practice those values in my own life.
Running is not only about physical fitness.
It develops mental strength. It improves emotional balance. It builds self-confidence. It teaches patience. It reminds us that every finish line is simply the beginning of another journey.
I may inspire my students through my lectures.
But I hope to inspire them even more through my lifestyle.
If one student chooses health over laziness, discipline over excuses, or perseverance over quitting because they saw my journey, then every kilometre I have run has found its true purpose.
My goal is not merely to become a better runner.
My goal is to become a better teacher, a better human being, and a better example for society.
Because education shapes minds.
Running shapes character.
Together, they shape a meaningful life.
