Why building muscle and building heart health both matter

“I thought it was not possible for me to run so far, but I remember I finished my 5 km run in just 42 minutes. It was a great day.”

Why Building Muscle and Building Heart Health Both Matter
A Member Spotlight on Chanchal
Six months ago, Chanchal joined MWC Runners Club not as someone new to fitness, but as someone already deep into one part of it, looking to build the other half. Her story is a reminder that fitness rarely fits into one box, and that community can be the missing piece even for those who already train hard on their own.

NOT STARTING FROM ZERO
Unlike many who come to running as their entry point into fitness, Chanchal walked into MWC Runners Club with a solid foundation already in place. A regular at the gym, she had spent years building a decent muscle base and a workout habit that had become second nature. Fitness, for her, was never the starting challenge. The challenge was expanding what fitness meant.
An ankle injury complicated that expansion. Cardio became difficult, and the natural instinct was to lean further into lifting, where the joint was under less strain, and quietly let cardiovascular training slide. Yet even on days when the pain made it hard to simply walk, Chanchal's gym habit never stopped. That refusal to let one setback erase years of discipline says as much about her mindset as any personal best could.
THE FIRST 5K THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Chanchal remembers her very first day with MWC Runners Club vividly. Given her ankle concerns and her gym-first background, running any real distance felt genuinely out of reach. She wasn't sure it was possible.
Then she finished her first 5 km run in 42 minutes.

That single run became a turning point, proof that the limits she had assumed for herself weren't as fixed as they seemed. It also introduced her to something she hadn't expected to find on a running track: a genuinely social, welcoming group of people who made the experience about more than just distance and pace.
MORE THAN A RUNNING CLUB
For Chanchal, MWC Runners Club has become as much about the setting and the people as it is about the training itself. Mahindra World City, with its lakes, surrounding hills, and open scenic stretches, has given her runs a backdrop she genuinely looks forward to each week. Add to that a community she describes as lovely to talk to and easy to connect with, and running has become less of a solitary discipline and more of a shared experience.
The two sides of her fitness routine, gym and running, have started to work in tandem. Years in the gym built her strength. Joining the running group is now steadily building something the gym alone couldn't: her cardiovascular health. Both, she's come to realise, matter equally, not as competing priorities, but as complementary ones.

THE RHYTHM OF CONSISTENCY
What stands out to Chanchal most about MWC Runners Club is its structure. Strength training every Tuesday and Trailblazers runs every Sunday give members a rhythm to build around, rather than relying on scattered motivation. She particularly admires the culture of shared leadership built into these weekend sessions, where members are regularly empowered to step up and lead.
Watching fellow members show up weekend after weekend at Trailblazers, chasing results with visible passion and determination, has been one of the most inspiring parts of her experience. It's the kind of quiet accountability that keeps a community moving forward together.
STEPPING INTO LEADERSHIP
That culture of shared leadership eventually became personal. Chanchal had the opportunity to lead one of the Trailblazer events himself, an experience she says gave her a real boost in confidence. She also volunteered at marathons organised by MWC Runners Club, contributing behind the scenes to events that other members would go on to run and remember.
For someone who joined the group unsure whether she could even complete a 5K, leading an event and volunteering at a marathon within six months marks a meaningful shift, not just in fitness, but in belonging.

A MESSAGE TO FELLOW MEMBERS
Looking back on her six months so far, Chanchal calls the experience amazing and heart touching. Her focus now is clear: keep building strength in the gym while steadily maintaining and improving her cardiovascular health through running.
Her message to anyone still on the sidelines is simple and direct: get active, and start shifting away from a sedentary lifestyle toward one built around movement. As she puts it, health is wealth, and no amount of money matters much once health is gone.
